A video showing doctors and nurses stopping a surgery to watch soccer has gone viral and sparked worldwide outrage. It is apparent that the doctors were watching the end of Chile vs. Portugal in the FIFA Confederations Cup Semi-Final.

As soon as Chilean goalkeeper Claudio Bravo blocked Portugal’s Joao Moutinho’s shot in the penalty shootout, the medical professionals in the operating room —wearing surgical attire and masks — erupt with joy with screams of excitement.

Chile advanced to the final of the FIFA Confederations Cup courtesy of a 3-0 penalty shootout win over Portugal in the semi-final of the tournament. The game was watched across the world and was billed in the run-up as being a contest between football superstars Cristiano Ronaldo and Alexis Sanchez.

While the patient does not seem to be in jeopardy, this certainly is not what you would want your doctors doing if you were in surgery. The shocking incident has, therefore, triggered the alarms in the medical community. Authorities in the South American country have slammed the surgeons “irresponsible” and “without ethics”.

Karla Rubilar, a member of the Chile government’s Health Commission, said:

“This is a serious situation. There are protocols that should be followed for the security and respect of all patients in all hospitals and health clinics. In this case, all of them were broken. The incident merits an investigation.”

In September 2016, video of a Colombian plastic surgeon Dr.David Majana Navarro dancing with nurse Angelica Mejia to a Bruno Mars song while operating on a patient went viral.

During what appears to be an operation around the stomach region, the pair — who are listening to pop music — suddenly put down their equipment and start dancing and laughing. They then stop mid movement, pick up their utensils and continue on with the operation.

Medellin councilor Bernardo Alejandro Guerra, who leaked the video, called the incident unethical:

“This is a lack of ethics and respect for the patient and the profession. The amazing thing is that the anesthesiologist does not appear in the video. He is the one responsible for the sleeping of the patient and he allows them to dance in the room, without respecting the protocol.”
